On 3 December 1971, the first day of the war, Lance Naik Albert Ekka of the 14th Battalion Brigade of Guards was part of an assault on the town of Gangasagar in East Pakistan. His company came under intense fire from a well-fortified enemy position with medium machine guns. Though wounded, Ekka charged the position, neutralised the gunner with his bayonet, and silenced the gun. He then climbed onto a building housing another gun emplacement and bayoneted the two-man crew. His wounds proved fatal, but his actions broke the enemy's hold on the position and allowed the operation to succeed. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
