Captain Vikram Batra

Captain Vikram Batra of the 13th Battalion JAK Rifles became the face of the Kargil War. During Operation Vijay he led his men up near-vertical cliffs at night to capture Point 5140 on 20 June 1999, radioing the now-legendary message: 'Yeh dil maange more.' He then volunteered for a second assault on Point 4875, a knife-edge ridge at 16,000 feet. While leading the attack on 7 July 1999, he spotted a fellow officer wounded in the open. He pulled the officer to safety but was fatally hit by an enemy burst. Aged 24, he had been engaged to be married. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously. His story later inspired the Bollywood film Shershaah.
