On 3 April 2021, a joint team of CRPF CoBRA commandos, District Reserve Guard, and Special Task Force was ambushed by an estimated 400 Maoists near Jonaguda village in Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh. The Maoists had laid a classic encirclement ambush in dense forest. Inspector Dilip Kumar Das led his CoBRA team in a fierce counter-engagement, fighting to break the encirclement and protect his men. He was killed in the action. Twenty-two security forces personnel were martyred that day — the deadliest Maoist ambush in over a decade. He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
